January Check Up | How are we doing?

Hey friends! How areeee you? We are a few weeks into the new year and I’m doing a little check in because, well, we’ve already been through a bit. Some of you are waiting to hear whether or not you’ll be going back into lockdown, some of you already are. Some of you, well I should say us (because I live here too) are in the US and chewing a fingernail or two as we approach inauguration day and some of us are dealing with the day to day stresses of being a human being. Period. Whatever you are dealing with, I want to encourage you and let you know that you are not dealing with it alone. One thing I’ve learned this past year is that we RARELY struggle alone. We may isolate ourselves and feel as though we are alone, but in reality there is always someone out there who understands or can empathize with how you are feeling. I think that’s been the biggest blessing of choosing to be authentic with my …

Self Care for When you Just Don’t Care

There are times when life is rainbows and sunshine. Times when breathing is easy and laughter is plentiful But then there are times when sometimes getting out of bed and choosing to engage with the day feels like climbing the highest mountain and the simple act of faking a smile robs you of every bit of your energy. These days it’s just as important, if not more so important to care for yourself. Self-care has been illustrated as sitting in a tub filled to the brim with bubbles with lit candles, sipping wine, and reading a book before bed. I mean there’s nothing inherently wrong about indulging in self-care in this way. It will definitely leave you feeling pampered, but I believe that fixating on only that physical side of self-care inadvertently cheapens the goal of self-care. And on those days when it’s hard to even convince yourself to eat and take a shower…a bubble bath and candles just aren’t going to cut it. So. When you don’t feel like it, when you can’t be …

Why I Stopped Trying to “Get in Shape”

Growing up I never thought about weight. I was never focused on that. I was a skinny kid who honestly and truly couldn’t care less about what I looked like. This carried into high school, where I was a track athlete, a competitive swimmer and an all around active human with a high metabolism. I could wear whatever I wanted and never worried about if something would make me “look fat”…because it wouldn’t. Fast forward to the college years. And no, it wasn’t the freshman 15 that got to me. It was actually everything that happened after college. The slow down of activity, long hours of sedentary work and the general stress that came along with adulthood. Put those factors together along with the slowing down of my metabolism and there you have it. I gained weight; and a bit of it. Now, it wasn’t a super dramatic increase, but it was enough to realize that I had gone from being at a place where I used to be so unconcerned about clothes fitting and …

keeping your mental wellness in check during stressful times

Keeping Your Mental Wellness in Check during Stressful Times

It’s been an interesting few weeks hasn’t it? The word normal is kinda obsolete at the moment as our reality seems to shift day by day. It can be for some quite unnerving. I know for me I have moments where I am totally fine and handling life like a champ, and then I have moments where I’d like to come out of bed only when life is back to what I’ve always known it to be. During times like these, its really important to check in with yourself and keep your mental wellness in check. My latest youtube video discusses how I’ve been coping and what I’ve started doing in order to keep on top of my mental wellness. It took me a little while to actually post it since I get a little transparent in this video, but AUTHENTICITY REMEMBER? (no idea what this means? here’s the blog post for clarification). Interested? Check it out! Thanks for watching guys! I keep forgetting to share my videos with you,. but I post quite a …

5 Healthy Habits for Mental Wellness

______________________________________________________________________________ *Note* This post may contain affiliate links. As an amazon affiliate member I earn from qualifying purchases. ______________________________________________________________________________ The habits we keep can improve our lives or be detrimental to our lives. Habits are defined as “routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously”. Naturally, because we are human, we have a tendency to easily pick up negative habits and hold onto them for dear life. These may be things we picked up over time such as binge eating salty snacks after a stressful day at work or biting your fingernails when you’re nervous. These negative habits are things we do that temporarily satisfy something in us even though they usually provide no measurable benefit. These also tend to be things that we are well aware that we need to be done and over with.  Did you know that it generally takes about 2 months to completely change a behavior? That means it generally only takes about two months to stop a bad habit or to introduce a positive one. …

I need to write about Jarrid Wilson.

It felt like we all lost. Like the entire community of us, those who have been fighting it for years, decades and those who are recently discovering themselves and how to cope with it, it felt like we all lost the fight. That’s how I felt at least, when I heard the news about Jarrid Wilson: pastor, father, husband and mental health advocate, taking his own life. It’s….unpleasant in general for many reasons…and by unpleasant I mean tragic, terribly sad and disturbing. The extremely haunting truth about his death…the part of it that sent me down a roller coaster of difficult emotions last night….emotions that were stronger than they should have been for someone I didn’t know was this: he was fighting the same thing I and many others fight everyday. He was doing the right things. Sharing. Talking. Helping other people through his struggle. He was a pastor. He loved Jesus. He loved people. People loved him. He wasn’t alone. And it still over took him. For the rest of us. Those of us …

So…People had a lot to say about my mental health post.

To say I was anything but surprised on the amount of feedback I got from my latest post would be lying. People loved it. It’s crazy because I was so hesitant to talk about this topic for many reasons, but I’m glad I did. There’s something about the human condition that uses the struggles that we all face to connect us. It gives us a community of people who relate to the fact that we all have something we’re going through. We’re all warriors earning our badges throughout this life and when we realize that we can shift the focus from ourselves and instead support each other. I think that’s pretty amazing. I made a video addressing the feedback I received. It’s on YouTube and you can find it by clicking here. I have a bunch of other videos on YouTube as well, but this is definitely one I’m proud of simply due to the amount of effort it took for a quick “thanks for loving on me” post. I’m also pretty proud of this …

Reset Day : Morning Routine

Every once in a while it’s good to take a break from your regular rushing around routine and just take a minute to wake up slow and really enjoy this life. I try to make sure I take time to do that at least twice a month. I don’t schedule it anymore (I used to when my life was absolutely ridiculous), now it just kind of happens. I can feel when my mind is a little too overstimulated, when my chest is a little too tight and when my shoulders are a bit too tense. It’s at those times that I know that a reset day is needed. I’m going to walk you through what that kind of day may look like for me, it’s different each time, but somethings remain consistent. I’ll go through the little things I do that make me feel human again and explain them along the way. Are you ready? The first thing I do on a day dedicated to just breathing and enjoying the day is turn off my …

Too Comfortable…

As some of you may already know from previous posts, my family and I are in celebration mode. We’re moving! The new home is bigger than what we’ve got now, spacious enough for each person to have their own breathing room, and has a few items from our dream home wish list that makes this move a little bit sweeter like wooden floors and multiple bathrooms (can we get an AAY-MENN). This past Thursday, I was assigned the task of staying at the house overnight because we had a day of deliveries scheduled starting from 8 in the morning. Makes sense right? Just stay at the new home and get a few extra minutes of sleep as opposed to being at the apartment and having to wake up earlier to be at the house in time. I was pretty excited. I already had a mattress, bedding, clothes, and a few other things so in my mind I was set. I got out of work around 4:00 and headed to the apartment to relax for a bit …
