How to Rock Pinterest for Your Business (For Free)

Maybe you’re a new blogger who’s looking to expand the reach of their shiny new website. Maybe, you’re not a blogger at all but another kind of creative who’s looking for an effective tool to drive traffic to their work. If that’s you you’re in the right space! I’m going to do my very best to QUICKLY help you help yourself by sharing one of the fastest ways I’ve been able to drive traffic to my page.

I have many tools, but Pinterest has been my most effective marketing tool and I’ve been able to use it for FREE. My goal: To help you learn how to kill it on Pinterest for your business, whatever that may be.

Pinterest, like any other social platform has its quirks. I’ve learned over this past year that learning it’s quirks, what works for Pinterest and what doesn’t, could be the thing that pushes the organic reach of my blog from average to substantially above average.

There are two important things to note about Pinterest.

First – It is an aesthetically influenced social platform. Meaning, for the most part if something you post looks good, it will do well. Here, appearance matters significantly more than substance. That doesn’t mean however, that you can just disregard your substance…no. Substance does matter, but here it’s about the first impression.

Second – It is a community platform. The likelihood of you doing well in the Pinterest game and not ever engaging with the Pinterest community is very low. It is important that you engage with others. This means you’ll need to re-pin relevant content posted by others, and you’ll need to do it often. This will help to keep you visible and relevant to those following you.

How to gain attention on Pinterest

To get attention on Pinterest you need to look like Pinterest. When I first started using Pinterest for my blog, I was simply reposting my link with a photo and a brief description and calling it a day. I would receive maybe 3 views, maybe a link click or save if I got lucky and that was about it. I didn’t get it. I thought I was a good writer and my pictures weren’t bad. Here’s an example:

It’s a good photo, but, for what my niche is (a mental wellness & personal development & blogger) this tells that community nothing. There’s nothing here to benefit them. There’s not even something that tells them this would be something interesting to read. It’s just a photo of some girl.

So I went to work.

I started researching my niche. What do people want to share? What do I want to know? If I was a consumer and I looked at my brand, what does it say to me? What would I gain from this? I took A LOT of time (months) to answer that question…reshaped my entire blogging strategy and THEN hit Pinterest again. This time it worked.

Now, these numbers aren’t anything crazy, and the “bigger pinners” will potentially look at my numbers and giggle. But here’s the thing, I took no courses. I paid for no advertising (with these specific pins). I don’t have pinning apps like tailwind, I use a free design program on my phone and I joined no pin/re-pin groups. I simply changed the way I presented my brand to Pinterest and stayed consistent.

I’m a small blogger. I don’t have the means to drop hundreds of dollars on a course or product. I had to get creative. When it took off the first time I thought it was a fluke…but then it started happening consistently and I realized…wait, there’s a strategy here, and it’s simple.

  1. Figure out where you fit
  2. “Fit in” (to a point)
  3. Provide content that doesn’t waste peoples time

Once I got it…I got it. And now I want to share it. Take this as a token, something I’ve learned that I’m sharing with you!

“Okay cool, but…I’m not a writer. How does this work for me?”

If you have a website, an Instagram a Facebook page or an Etsy shop this can work for you. If you’re a wedding photographer and have a website, put your photos up! Make mini blog posts right there on Pinterest (a few paragraphs or less) about Photographer hacks for how to make your couples smile and put up a photo! Link that photo to your website and boom. Traffic. If you’re a graphic designer, post your designs, past projects, and link it to your website. Every once in a while giving advice about your favorite fonts or trends and link it to your website. Traffic. I know it seems like I’m simplifying it and that’s because I am. I used to be so intimidated by Pinterest, but not anymore. I don’t nail it EVERY TIME, but now that I know how, it’s much easier to do.

Give it a shot!

Best of luck friends! Stay safe!

  1. I want to try this and see how it works for me. Pinterest in tandem with blogging isn’t really big where I’m from (South Africa) and I’ve been wondering how I can increase blog traffic to my new blog site..
    Thank you for these tips!
